Get smarter about pH values and what they mean for your skin

As consumers, we’re often bombarded with endless skincare products promising to give us beautiful, radiant, and healthy-looking skin. However, we often overlook the importance of maintaining a healthy pH balance in our skin.

pH stands for “potential hydrogen” and measures the acidity or alkalinity of a substance. On a scale of 0-14, a pH of 7 is neutral, anything below is acidic, and anything above is alkaline. The pH of our skin plays a crucial role in maintaining healthy skin barrier function. The ideal pH range for our skin is between 4.5 and 5.5, which is slightly acidic.

When our skin’s pH balance is off, it can lead to a range of skin issues, such as dryness, sensitivity, inflammation, acne, and even premature aging. The skin’s natural barrier is made up of a thin, protective layer called the acid mantle, which is made up of sebum, sweat, and natural bacteria. This acid mantle helps keep moisture in the skin and harmful bacteria out.

Many factors can disrupt the pH balance of our skin, such as using harsh skincare products, using hot water for washing, environmental pollution, and even the use of antibiotics. However, there are ways to restore the skin’s pH balance and maintain healthy skin.

  1. Use pH balanced skincare products: Opt for gentle, pH balanced skincare products that help maintain the skin’s natural pH. Look for products with a pH range of 4.5 to 5.5.
  2. Avoid harsh soaps: Harsh soaps can strip the skin of its natural oils and disrupt the skin’s pH balance. Instead, use gentle, sulfate-free cleansers that won’t damage the skin barrier.
  3. Use lukewarm water: Hot water can strip the skin of its natural oils and disrupt its pH balance. Instead, use lukewarm water for washing your face.
  4. Incorporate acidic products: Incorporate acidic products like AHAs, BHAs, and Vitamin C in your skincare routine. These products help exfoliate the skin and maintain the skin’s pH balance.
  5. Eat a balanced diet: Eating a balanced diet rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals can help maintain healthy skin and support the skin’s natural pH balance.

Net, maintaining a healthy pH balance is crucial for healthy skin. By following these simple steps, you can help restore the skin’s natural pH balance and maintain beautiful, healthy-looking skin.
